![]() | Steven R. Sarkisian, Jr., M.D. Clinical Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology
Steven R. Sarkisian, Jr., MD is a clinical assistant professor of Ophthalmology at the Dean A. McGee Eye Institute at the University of Oklahoma in Oklahoma City. A native of Pennsylvania, Dr. Sarkisian received his undergraduate degree from Wheaton College, in Illinois where he graduated with honors. Following college, Dr. Sarkisian did graduate work at Westminster Theological Seminary in Philadelphia. Remaining in Philadelphia, he received his M.D. degree from Jefferson Medical College followed by an internship at Chestnut Hill Hospital. Dr. Sarkisian completed an ophthalmology residency at the State University of New York Health Science Center (SUNY Downstate) in Brooklyn, New York and did a fellowship in glaucoma at the Hamilton Eye Institute at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center in Memphis, following which he was asked to stay on the faculty where he served until July 2006. Dr. Sarkisian joined the faculty at the Dean A. McGee Eye Institute in August 2006. He has an active interest in surgical innovation for the treatment of glaucoma with involvement in several clinical trials. He is the Primary Investigator for the pilot studies which have taken place for the EagleVision glaucoma drainage implants and is one of the leading investigators for the prospective, multi-center trial comparing the Ex-Press mini glaucoma shunt to standard trabeculectomy (XVT Study). He is also co-investigator for the Ahmed-Baerveldt Comparison Study (ABC Study), the Trabeculectomy vs. Tube Study (TVT Study), and the Anecortave Acetate study. Due to his involvement in the development of new glaucoma technology, he has been active in presenting and publishing his work both in America and internationally. He also serves as a editorial reviewer for several ophthalmology journals. Dr. Sarkisian has retained an interest in biomedical ethics, having served on the Professional Code of Conduct Committee at Jefferson Medical College, the Ethics Committee of Chestnut Hill Hospital, and the UT Faculty Senate. He also has been active in organized medicine, having served as President of the Jefferson Chapter of the AMA. He also served as a Trustee of the Pennsylvania Medical Society as a medical student. Certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology, Dr. Sarkisian is also a member of the American Glaucoma Society, the Chandler-Grant Glaucoma Society, the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the American Medical Association, the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology, and numerous local and state ophthalmology societies. He and his wife Anne have four children and reside in Edmond, Oklahoma. | ||||
