Aphakia is the condition in which the crystalline lens has been surgically removed from the eye due to a congenital cataract or a traumatic injury. Surgery can occur at any age. Sometimes permanent corneal scarring can occur from a traumatic injury to the eye. When this occurs the scarring and irregular surface of the cornea causes vision to be very distorted. Frequently patients can only obtain good vision again with the aid of a contact lens that creates a new smooth refracting surface for the light rays to strike in a uniform way which produces better vision.
