Bio
Dr. Anil D. Patel is a Clinical Professor of Ophthalmology at the Dean McGee Eye Institute (DMEI) in Oklahoma City. He also serves as the medical director of clinical operations at the Institute. He is a native of Canada, however, has been with DMEI since 2004. He is a board-certified ophthalmologist in both Canada and the United States. He completed medical school at the University of Saskatchewan followed by training in internal medicine. Thereafter, he completed an ophthalmology residency at the University of Saskatchewan. Following residency training, Dr. Patel completed a two-year fellowship in neuro-ophthalmology at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City.
Dr. Patel joined the faculty of the Department of Ophthalmology at the University of Saskatchewan in 1998 and was quickly promoted to Department Chairman where he served until 2004. He was recruited to the University of Oklahoma and began his practice at DMEI in 2004.
Dr. Patel’s practice focus is neuro-ophthalmology, which deals with the neurologic aspects of eye disease. This includes conditions such as optic nerve disorders, stroke, brain tumors, double vision, visual field loss, pupil abnormalities, idiopathic intracranial hypertension, and unexplained loss of vision. Neuro-ophthalmologists work very closely with neurologists and neurosurgeons.
Dr. Patel has published extensively in his field, including peer-reviewed articles and textbook chapters. He has served on the Editorial Board of “Focal Points”, a prestigious publication of the American Academy of Ophthalmology. He was also a board examiner for ophthalmology at the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada and is currently an examiner for the American Board of Ophthalmology. He is a fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (FRCSC), American College of Surgeons (FACS), American Academy of Ophthalmology, and North American Neuro-Ophthalmology Society. In addition, he is also a member of the American Medical Association, Oklahoma State Medical Association, and Oklahoma Academy of Ophthalmology. He also serves as the president of the American Association of Physicians of Indian Origin (AAPI), Oklahoma Chapter.
From a national perspective, he serves on several committees for the North American Neuro-Ophthalmological Society (NANOS) and American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO). Additionally, Dr. Patel has extensive experience in clinical research having served as the principal investigator for two National Institutes of Health and National Eye Institute (NIH/NEI) sponsored studies.
Dr. Patel is very involved in medical student, resident, and fellow education. He is also the director of the Neuro-Ophthalmology Fellowship Program at DMEI.
Dr. Patel has been selected as a Castle Connolly Top Doctor and has been chosen as one of the Best Doctors in America since 2007.
Dr. Patel’s wife, Sonal, is a pharmacist. They have two children in college, Kunal and Kyra. He enjoys traveling with his family, curling, cycling, and running.
